"Affirmative action through consolation prizes" has been accepted for the UNU-WIDER project `Discrimination and Affirmative Action: What have we learnt so far?' The quality of submissions was highly competitive and the proposal by NIBS Post Doc, Francesco Fallucchi and former CeDEx student, Simone Quercia, was selected from a pool of more than 170 submissions. The United Nations University, World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) is based in Helsinki, Finland. Its mandate is to: • undertake multidisciplinary research and policy analysis on structural changes affecting the living conditions of the world's poorest people • provide a forum for professional interaction and the advocacy of policies leading to robust, equitable and environmentally sustainable growth • promote capacity strengthening and training for scholars and government officials in the field of economic and social policy making UNU-WIDER issued a call "for papers exploring discrimination against ethnically and racially marginalized groups and affirmative action, in both developing and developed countries. The aim is that these papers will culminate as articles in a special issue of a journal". Francesco and Simone were awarded an $8,000 US honorarium.
